Every author wants more reviews (mostly good ones, although a mix looks more natural) on Amazon. Reviews signal to potential readers that others are interested in the book and like it. If your book has fewer than 20 reviews, it looks like nobody is interested in it. If it has over 100 reviews, it looks like a lot of people are interested in it. That means 20 reviews is the minimum to shoot for, and 100 is the next goal.
So how do you get book reviews? Here are three of my favorite ways, and they’re all legit and won’t get you in trouble with Amazon:
Get reviews tip #1 – Make it easy. Don’t just ask for reviews, make it easy for people to give them. For example, you may have read my book 60 Days to LinkedIn Mastery, but perhaps you didn’t leave a review yet. I could have sent out an email asking, “If you’ve read my book but haven’t left a review, would you leave me one pretty please?” but then you’d have to track the book down. I could include a link to the book, but you’d still have to figure out how to leave a review after going to my book page. Instead, give people a link directly to where they leave the review, like this https://www.amazon.com/review/create-review?&asin=1734718447. All you have to do is switch out that number at the end of the link and replace it with the 10-digit ISBN from your own book. And yes, I am asking you for a review, if you haven’t already left one, pretty please. 😘
Get reviews tip #2 – Make an offer, but…don’t make it a quid pro quo. Don’t say, “I’ll give you a copy of my book if you give me a good review on Amazon.” Instead, say, “If you’re interested in my book I’ll send you a copy, and if you like it I’d appreciate it if you’d leave an honest review on Amazon.” Then you send them a PDF copy of your book. Or you can be more proactive and send a PDF copy of your book. Here’s an example:
Hi everyone, my book coaching client Rob Finlay just launched his new book Beyond the Building about commercial real estate and how to succeed as an operator or investor by taking advantage of data, technology, and innovation. Here’s a link to a copy of the book, would you be willing to give it a look and then leave a review on Amazon? Here’s an easy link that will take you straight to where you can leave a review. Either way, the copy of the book is yours to keep. Thanks!
BTW, if you really want a copy of Rob’s book for free, DM me and I’ll send you a PDF of it.
Get reviews tip #3 – Do a giveaway. This is simple, but you have to do it exactly the right way. You can’t tell people “I’ll give you something or I’ll enter you into a contest if you leave a review,” but you can say, “I’ll enter you into a contest if you click on this review link, whether or not you leave a review. I hope you will leave a review, but whether or not you do, you’re still entered in the contest.”
This is how it might sound:
One of my book coaching clients, Rob Finlay, recently published his book about commercial real estate. You can download a free PDF copy here. Next, if you’ll click the button below to go to his review page, I’ll enter you into a contest to win a $100 Amazon gift card. You don’t have to leave a review, although I’d love it if you did. But it will have no impact on whether you win or not. I’m tracking clicks on the link and that’s it, and I’ll choose a winner within the next 24 hours.

Step 1. Download the book and give it a read.
Step 2. Click the button above.
Step 3. Leave a review. Note: The review is optional but I’d appreciate it.
If your book is already out, try these tactics. If your book is coming out in the future, save this email for future use. Either way, I’d love to know how it works out for you.
